NACS / SAE J3400 Adapter Procurement: A Practical Verification Checklist
A source-led checklist for evaluating a charging adapter by its actual vehicle, inlet, EVSE, power and thermal use case rather than connector shape alone.

SAE J3400 is the North American Charging System recommended practice. The current J3400_202409 record describes general physical, electrical, functional, safety and performance requirements for conductive power transfer using the NACS coupler. That scope is a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for a product-specific compatibility decision.
For a procurement file, first document the exact vehicle inlet, the EVSE-side connector, the intended charging mode, the maximum continuous current, the expected ambient temperature and the vehicle maker's permitted-use guidance. A connector that mates mechanically is not automatically validated for every vehicle, charging network or DC charging scenario.
SAE's J3400/2_202505 focuses on dimensional definitions for NACS connectors and inlets. SAE's J3400/1_202504 covers an adapter safety and OEM-qualified device designation process, with a stated scope limited to adapters between SAE J3400 and SAE J1772. Buyers should therefore ask suppliers which standard, test method and exact adapter configuration their evidence applies to.
Before a trial order, request the controlled drawing and revision, electrical ratings, temperature-rise test conditions, traceability method, sample inspection record and any applicable vehicle or network approval. Keep these artifacts attached to the SKU and revision number. This makes a distributor's compatibility claim auditable and avoids treating a broad marketing statement as an engineering approval.
