IATF 16949 Revision Process: What a Parts Supplier Should Monitor

On 24 October 2024, the International Automotive Task Force announced that it had started the revision process for IATF 16949:2016. Starting a revision process is not the same as publishing a replacement standard. Sales material and quality documents should therefore avoid naming a future edition, transition date or requirement unless an official IATF publication confirms it. A sensible preparation step is to maintain a controlled register of the certificates, customer-specific requirements, process documents and supplier records that support each product family. Each record should carry an owner, revision, source, effective date and applicability note. Customer-specific requirements are not static. The IATF publishes current customer-specific requirement information separately from the core standard. When a customer programme changes, confirm the applicable requirement directly against the responsible OEM or the current IATF publication instead of relying on an old supplier presentation. For buyers, the useful diligence questions are specific: What is the certified site's scope? Which product and process are covered? Which revision of a customer-specific requirement was reviewed? Can the supplier provide controlled evidence and traceability? These questions produce a clearer sourcing decision than a logo on a quotation.
