Why the Wrong Part Is the Real Risk For workshops and distributors sourcing parts for Chinese new energy vehicles (NEVs), one of the biggest purchasing risks is not always the price. It is getting the wrong part. A part can look identical in a product photo, carry a similar OE reference, and even be listed for the same vehicle model — yet still differ because of the model year, battery configuration, market specification, connector design, hardware revision, or other vehicle-specific changes. The result is familiar to many importers: the shipment arrives, the technician discovers that the part does not fit, the vehicle remains in the workshop, and the cost of return freight, replacement shipping, labor, and lost customer time quickly exceeds the original margin. This is why professional parts sourcing should begin with vehicle identification, not price comparison. A reliable process can be reduced to three steps: VIN → Vehicle & Configuration → OE Cross-Check Step 1: Start With the VIN — Identify the Exact Vehicle The VIN is the most important starting point when the application is unclear. Instead of asking a customer only "Which model do you need?", a professional parts inquiry should first request the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Why? Because the same model name can cover multiple production periods and configurations. For Chinese NEVs, differences may occur between: • Different model years • Different battery configurations • Different powertrain versions • Different trim levels • Different production revisions • Different market specifications • Different left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive applications • Different hardware or electronic configurations A model name such as "BYD [model]" or "Zeekr [model]" is therefore often not enough to establish a complete parts application. The VIN provides a much stronger identification starting point. However, there is an important distinction: VIN identification reduces uncertainty; it does not automatically eliminate every fitment risk. Catalog data, production changes, regional specifications, and superseded OE numbers can still require additional verification. That is why the VIN should be treated as the first verification point — not the final answer. Step 2: Check Model Year, Battery Version and Configuration Once the VIN is available, the next step is to identify the vehicle configuration that matters for the specific part. This is where many purchasing mistakes happen. A vehicle may undergo changes during its production cycle. A facelift, model-year update, battery-system change, electronic hardware revision, or regional specification change can result in different components being used on vehicles that appear to belong to the same model family. This is particularly important for Chinese NEVs, because many components are closely connected to the vehicle's electrical, electronic, thermal-management, and battery systems. Depending on the part, the following information may need to be checked: Electronic control modules — Connector, hardware/software version, vehicle configuration Battery-related components — Battery version, vehicle configuration, production version Lighting — Left/right position, market specification, connector, facelift status Brake components — Front/rear axle, caliper type, disc specification Suspension — Left/right position, front/rear position, suspension version Body parts — Sensor openings, mounting points, washer openings, trim interfaces Cooling/thermal components — System configuration, connector, mounting structure Filters — Vehicle version, engine/electric-drive configuration, dimensions The key principle is simple: do not assume that "same model" means "same part." Step 3: Cross-Check the OE Number — Confirm the Physical Specification After the vehicle has been identified, the OE number becomes the next important verification reference. But the OE number should not be used in isolation. A professional cross-check should combine: VIN + Vehicle Configuration + OE Number + Physical/Technical Details This is especially important when: • An OE number has been superseded • Several OE numbers exist for the same application • Different production periods use different references • Left/right components are easily confused • Different connectors are used • A component has different hardware revisions • The supplier's catalog does not clearly identify the application When necessary, ask the customer to provide photos of the existing part. A clear photo can reveal details that may not appear in a catalog: • Connector shape and number of pins • Mounting brackets and bolt-hole layout • Housing shape and physical dimensions • Label information • Sensor openings and other structural differences This is why an experienced supplier does not simply ask "What is the OE number?" The better question is: "What vehicle is this part going on, and what evidence can we use to verify the application?" The 3-Step Fitment Process at a Glance 1. VIN — Identify the exact vehicle. 2. Configuration — Confirm model year, battery/powertrain version, market specification and relevant hardware configuration. 3. OE Cross-Check — Verify the OE number against the vehicle information and, where necessary, physical photos or technical specifications. Only after these steps should the supplier finalize the quotation and procurement recommendation. Why This Matters More Than Saving a Few Dollars on the Part For an importer, the real cost of a wrong part is rarely limited to the purchase price. A wrong part can create a chain of additional costs: Wrong part → International return freight → Replacement shipment → Customs and handling costs → Workshop labor → Vehicle downtime → Customer complaints → Inventory tied up → Lost future business For a distributor or repair workshop, the commercial impact can be even greater. A part that costs $100 less is not cheaper if it cannot be installed. The objective of professional sourcing is therefore not "find the lowest price first." It is: confirm the correct application first, then compare commercially viable options. A Practical Rule for Chinese NEV Parts Sourcing Before sending an inquiry, try to provide at least: VIN + Model + Model Year + Part Name + OE Number + Quantity For parts with known configuration differences, add: Battery Version / Powertrain Version / Market + Photos of Existing Part The more application-sensitive the component, the more important this information becomes. For electronic modules, lighting assemblies, battery-related components, body parts and other version-sensitive products, a photo or additional vehicle information can prevent a significant amount of back-and-forth communication. It also makes different quotations genuinely comparable. One More Important Point: Fitment Is Not the Same as Product Grade Even after the correct application has been confirmed, there is another decision that should not be overlooked: what type of product does the customer actually want? The same vehicle application may be available as: • Genuine/OE parts • OEM/OES supplier products • Specified aftermarket grades • Remanufactured units, where appropriate These should not automatically be treated as interchangeable. For example, a customer may require a genuine electronic control module but accept a reputable aftermarket filter. Another customer may prioritize a supplier-brand suspension component to achieve a better balance between cost and availability. Therefore, a complete purchase instruction should define both: Fitment + Product Grade. Only when both are confirmed can the order be considered commercially complete.
